Like Dating, Your Skin has a Type šŸ˜

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

What's Yours? Dry, Oily, Normal, or Sensitive?

Just like dating, your skin certainly has a type and will only respond well when it's MATCHED with the products designed for it. When you combine the correct products with your skin type, you can expect the happily ever after for your skin health journey. The most common skin types are dry, oily, normal, and sensitive. Let's dive deeper into each of these types to see what your perfect match could be.

Dry

Up first is dry skin. Dry skin can be needy because it doesn't produce enough oil (lipids) naturally. These natural oils help protect from environmental damage and aging. Due to the lack of this natural oil production, dry skin needs extra care and protection. Stimulating oil production is critical and your regimen should include products that are occlusive in nature to help hold in moisture.

Let's not confuse dry with dehydrated skin though. Dehydrated skin lacks water versus oil. Dehydrated skin can look thin or flaky and can feel tight and dry. With this type, the skin tends to absorb products quickly. External factors such as medications, coffee, alcohol, sun exposure, and harsh products can cause this. Drinking your recommended water amount and using hydrating products can help to restore moisture.

Why So Extra? (Oily)

Next up is the type that usually causes the most headaches for everyone.

Unlike dry skin, where not enough oil is produced, oily skin is the exact opposite and is characterized by an excess of oil production. This means it requires more cleansing and exfoliating compared to other skin types.

Unfortunately, this also means that it is more prone to blemishes because the pores get clogged with oil and a buildup of dead skin cells. Balancing the skin's oil production through treatments and products is vital. I know the first instinct you have when your skin is oily is to cleanse it more frequently, however over cleansing can make matters worse by stripping the skin's

When you constantly strip the skin of oil your body's natural defense is to produce more oil to compensate. Proper treatment, exfoliation, and a water-based hydrator will help keep oily skin clean and balanced.

The Perfect One (Normal)

We all seek and wish for the perfect match and I'm sure the same goes for our skin.

Those who have normal skin have a great oil-water balance. The pore size is smaller and sometimes barely noticeable.

This skin type usually has minimal to no blemishes but can fluctuate between dry and oily occasionally. Maintenance and preventative care are the main goals for this type of skin.

Why So Sensitive?

When we are constantly bombarded with stimuli and stress, things can get a bit sensitive and so can our skin. Sensitive skin is more of a condition but can also be genetically predisposed.

It is characterized by fragile, thin skin and redness. When your skin is sensitive, it is easily irritated by products, heat exposure, or medications. When treating your sensitive skin, be sure to choose products that are gentle, calming, and non-irritating. Goals for this type of skin is to protect, soothe, and calm.
